Working with clay to create useful and decorative vessels has been a passion of mine for many years.
I am primarily self taught, and along with workshops and classes at the Saratoga Clay Arts Center (SCAC) have developed as a ceramic artist. Most of my work has been created out of my rented studio space at SCAC since November 2015. The majority of my ceramic pieces are of an organic nature with various shapes, curves and natural coloring. Each piece I create, either by hand building or by throwing on my wheel, is unique. Most of my work relates to one another in design, form and dimension, but each is an individual piece of art. I enjoy atmospheric firing the most and have made that my main focus of work recently. Fortunate for me there are artists and art centers relatively close to me that offer firings in wood fired kilns. In May 2019 I completed a 4 day Wood Fire residency with Jordan Becker at Salem Art Works in Salem, NY. I have also participated in firings with Barbara Reeley of Monroe Clayworks at Northeast Ceramics in Troy, NY. Woodfiring is a very manual, time consuming and labor intensive process to fire ceramic work, but the results are outstanding. I am truly in awe of the work created by wood firing artists. I also fire my work in the barrel, pit and smoke firing methods at my home in Wilton, NY. As with wood firing, it is a very manual process, but takes less time. I have have achieved wonderful results using these methods. For many years to come, I will be a student of ceramic arts. There is a myriad of techniques in the world of ceramics - so my journey has just begun! |
